Should you spend money on a rented property?

If you live in a rented property and are planning on staying there long term, then you may wish to decorate or make some home improvements. You first need to check with your landlord or estate agent as to what changes you are allowed to make. If you rent through an estate agent you may find that they want you to ask permission each time you want to change something. If you privately rent then you may find that the landlord is more relaxed about what you can do. Never make any changes to a property without having permission first and ideally get it in writing in case there is any dispute further on down the line.

Lots of people don’t like the idea of spending money on a rented property as they believe it is a big of a waste, especially if they are trying to save up to buy there own house. But if you are likely to be living there for some time then you do want it to feel like home and be a place that you can invite friends or family over to without feeling embarrassed.

Try and have a look what changes you can make that don’t cost a lot of money but that make a big difference. Often simply painting the walls and ceilings can really give a place a fresh and clean look and cost as little as £20 per room.
