Knocking through to make a kitchen diner – is it a good idea?

Open plan living is very popular at the moment. Many people feel that halls are wasted space and it is better used added to part of a living room, dining room or play room for example. When it comes to knocking down walls, you need to do some research before you get carried away. Lots of people choose to knock their kitchen in through to their dining room or lounge. This can give them a huge space to play with and also allow families to socialise whilst cooking.

You first need to check if the wall you are planning on knocking down is a supporting wall. It may be that it is taking the load from above and if you take it down the level above would come down too. If it is not a supporting wall then there shouldn’t be an issue removing it. If however you find that it is a supporting wall then you will need to ensue that an RSJ is put in its place. The wall will need to be held up with struts whilst the RSJ is put in to place. This can add a lot of extra costs to your project so it is vital that you consider this before getting carried away with plans for an open plan kitchen / diner.
