It could be that your builder or builders come down with Covid in the weeks running up to Christmas which would mean they have to isolate for ten days. They may not even feel well enough to return to work after that period. It is simply not worth the risk to start any major projects now. If you have the bug, why not do a little bit of simple decorating, or start to plan for your renovation project. Create a timeline of when you want work to start and when you expect it to be completed. You can then split it into stages to ensure that you stay on track. You should try and be a bit generous with your time scales to ensure you allow for any delays that may come up.
